Monday Millennium Programme

Monday Millennium Programme was started in 2012 by a local homeschooling mum as an attempt to “fill the P.E. gap” and as a means of providing affordable daytime swimming lessons for her own family and other home-educating families. Today, this long-running and popular programme is made possible through the dedication of volunteers willing to facilitate it out of goodwill and without remuneration. (Ensure you thank them!)

If you have any questions regarding this programme, please do not contact AUT Millennium directly. As it comes under the schools programme and is subsidised by the MOE’s LEOTC scheme, a school coordinator (homeschool coordinator in our case) is responsible for all administration (registrations, payments, etc.) and communications with families.

It is important that ALL enquiries come through our HASCA Millennium Coordinator.

This is an excellent swimming programme that our community is incredibly fortunate to have access at an affordable rate through the Ministry of Education’s LEOTC scheme, allowing many of our families to swim all year round. Others swim for 2-3 terms annually; this is fine, but it will slow progress. The programme itself is designed for your child’s success—the key to this is regular participation and commitment.

It is available for home-educating children aged 5-18 years and catering to absolute beginners, intermediate, and through to advanced swimmers.

The programme runs all year during the term; however, *times vary depending on the number of enrolees but usually Monday morning until around 1 in the afternoon.

30-Minute Lessons. Most children do the 30-minute lessons every week moving through different levels as they progress in their swimming ability.

45-Minute Pre-development and Development Squad Lessons. Advanced swimmers who have achieved beyond level 6/7 move up to pre-development and development squad lessons by invitation only. These lessons last for 45 minutes each week and aim to improve technique whilst increasing speed, stamina, and overall endurance.

30-Minute Private Lessons. These are one-to-one lessons lasting for 30 minutes each week and subject to availability so please get in touch with the coordinator before enrolling.

New Swimmers. All new swimmers aged 6 and above undergo a pre-assessment to ensure accurate lane placement. In some cases, new swimmers aged 5 and returning swimmers who have been absent for more than two terms may also require a pre-assessment. Appointments for pre-assessments are booked and organised by our homeschool coordinator (i.e. HASCA Millennium Coordinator) but are conducted by qualified AUT Millennium staff. There is no charge for this service but please be respectful and turn up for your appointment. A booking time will be allocated to you in due course so watch your email for this. If you missed your pre-assessment appointment, your child will not be placed and you will need to register again next term.

Timetable. Swim times and lanes are allocated by AUTM and depend largely on your child’s age and ability. We assess swimmers to ensure accurate lane placement. We do try to accommodate larger families with similar swim times to avoid long waits, but this may not always be possible. Programme placement is at the discretion of AUTM Programme Coordinator and Manager.

We manage around 140 homeschool swimmers each term — please be kind and patient — we do try to place everyone.

Progress & Assessment. At the end of each term, an assessment sheet applicable to the child’s level is given to each swimmer. This helps the child and parent to see their progress and identify areas that need attention. Instructors also offer verbal feedback throughout the term. You will find the programme supervisors are usually on the pool deck on Mondays and are very knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. Levels of Achievement are shown below.

It is important to note that we do not take additional swimmers at the middle of the term. If you missed the registration, you’re always welcome to join the next term.

This comprehensive sports programme for home-educating students runs from 1:45 – 2:45 PM weekly at AUT Millennium’s superb facilities during Mondays of Term 1 and Term 4. It can accommodate up to 75 students aged 6 – 18 years old. **5 year olds are welcome to join during Term 1 only.

Run by experienced AUTM instructors and other professional associates, this sports programme includes various water activities (e.g. kayaking, snorkelling) and sports (e.g. soccer/rippa rugby). Each week will have a different group activity that is always about movement, having fun while learning different skills.

Children aged 12 and over will have a different focus, such as strength, conditioning, power, agility, problem solving, movement exploration etc.  The programme takes a unique approach, incorporating the latest research in the youth athlete space and incorporating that into fun movement challenges, games and a mixture of traditional exercises which help students become fitter, faster and stronger. Movement Exploration is an exciting session made up of obstacle courses, movement challenges and drills that target some basic fundamental movement patterns. Students will get the opportunity to explore what their body is capable of and learn how they can manipulate their body or the environment to help them achieve certain tasks. Our coaches consider growth and maturation at an individual level to ensure they’re providing training that is targeted to each member’s needs and ability levels. This programme is also a great social opportunity – a time for the children to be with kids their own age and have fun, plus a nice time for mums (and dads) to catch up, have a swim, or enjoy some quiet time.

Please consider that due to the long-term success and popularity of this programme, it fills quickly. Placement will be on a first-come, first-served basis (i.e. pay as soon as possible to confirm your spot).

This single day event at the end of Term 4 only is aptly scheduled at the start of summer when families are likely to enjoy the sun, the sand, and the surf. The programme is 1 – 2 hours (depending on age group) held at the fantastic pools of AUT Millennium between 9:30 AM – 12:45PM and open to homeschoolers aged 6 to 18 years old.

Water Safety teaches key water safety principles and develops necessary attitudes, skills and behaviour to use and enjoy our environment safely. By providing a hands-on approach, utilising boats and lifejackets, the students experience deep water safety and survival drills in a controlled warm safe environment with trained and experienced instructors.

Surf Safety teaches key surf safety principles and survival techniques in a practical session that aims to help prevent water related tragedies from occurring by raising awareness of personal limitations, potential dangers, and balancing of peer pressure. The rips & currents drill allows students to experience the movement of fast flowing water and the difficulties of swimming against it in a safe controlled environment.

The Water and Surf Safety programme is endorsed by Coastguard Boating Education New Zealand as part of their Safe Boating Education programme.

Spaces are limited, so placement will be on a first-come, first-served basis. It is advisable to settle your due as early as you can to secure your place.
