The Incredible Edible Book Day Event 2021

Edible Book Day: You really can have your book … and eat it too!

What is it?

The International Edible Book Festival is an annual event usually held on or around 1st of April, which is also known as Edible Book Day. The global event has been celebrated since 2000 in various parts of the world, where “edible books” are created, displayed, and small events are held. The creations are photographed and then…consumed!

Yes, for all homeschoolers! AHE (Auckland Home Educators) has been running Edible Book Day events for several years, and HASCA joined them in 2019. We love it! It’s a super fun and the best-ever way to create community and form friendships whilst sharing scrumptious food! So simple: Create! Show! Share!

Two Events: HASCA & AHE

HASCA runs the event on Auckland’s North Shore and AHE runs theirs in Mt Wellington, usually on or around the same date. By running two events – both sides of the bridge, we hope we can better serve the many homeschooling families across Auckland who wish to take part in this fun event. Less time travelling = more time creating.

In 2021, HASCA’s Edible Book Day will be upgraded to The Incredible Edible Book Day Event! It will take place at the HASCA Hub (North Shore YMCA) on Thursday, 15th April & you are all invited! We will do a whole lot more than just create book-themed food & share it. We’ll dress up as our favourite book characters, we’ll be questioned & quizzed, & we’ll have an absolute blast! * more details to come * registrations will open in March *

It’s so simple … CREATE!  SHOW!  SHARE!

Choose a book (character or scene from a book) and recreate it as food!
  • Your creation could even be related to the title, a character, or the theme of the book: you choose! Get creative and have fun!
  • On the day, bring along your wonderful creation and your book too (if you have it).
  • All the edible books will be displayed and then we will EAT OUR WORDS (we eat our creations) … A SHARED FEAST!

This is a non-competitive family event. It’s all about sharing good books, creative ideas, interesting and fun food … and creating community!

We will share more details about The Incredible Edible Book Day Event 2021 soon!

HASCA kindly meets the costs of this event and asks that each entrant brings along one can of food or pantry item (which can be made into wholesome meals). All food items are donated to Sunday Blessings, a volunteer organisation which serves up hot meals to the homeless in Auckland city each week.

Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.  — B. Kerrey
