English L2/3 ~ Year 12/13

L2 & L3 English: Senior Literature with Nina Lawgun

When:  Wednesdays 1pm  – 2:30pm (tbc)

Where: Torbay, North Shore

Who:  Aimed at students 16yrs+ working towards level 3. Must have earned at least 10 credits in level 2 English.

Students will learn to undertake critical analysis of complex literary texts.

  • The level 3 English class is limited to 4 students.
  • Classes are for 1.5 hours per week over 4 terms.
  • Requires 3  – 5 hours of homework each week.
  • Fully aligned to NCEA level 3 achievement standards

Planned Content: TBC once students have indicated their preferences.

2019 – English Level 3

Term 1 – Feminist Literary Theory & Applied Critical Analysis  – 4 Credits (Class Dates: 7th February to 11th April 2019, 10 weeks)

Choose One of the following novels:

The Scarlett Letter

The Handmaid’s Tale

Pride and Prejudice

Choose one of the following plays: 

Taming of the Shrew


The Crucible

Term 2 – Cross-Text achievement Standard – 4 Credits (Class Dates: May 2nd – 4th July 2019, 10 weeks)

Novel: Under a Thousand Spendid Suns

Film: The Piano

Term 3 – Film Study  – 3 or 4 Credits

Weeks 1  – 3 

Choose one of the following:

The Passion of Christ

The Piano

Weeks 4 – 10

Exam prep: Studied written or visual texts

Or another internal if not wanting to do an external exam.

Term 4 – Externals  4  – 8 credits

Exam prep

Final Assessment for Writing Folio – 6 Credits

In term 2 students will be asked to indicate whether they want to sit exams and this will determine the content for the 2nd half of term 3 and for term 4.
