About the Programme & Tutor

The DanceSport programme was created by Taryn Howarth. Taryn has danced professionally since the age of 14. Her love of dance led her to start her own dance company and programmes.

Taryn loves teaching children to dance, and teaching through dance. She notices huge changes in the social interaction of her dance students: the children not only learn to dance but gain positive attitudes towards one another.

Taryn’s vision is to teach DanceSport as a tool to help children build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem.

DanceSport is a partner dance programme for boys and girls, which links physical activity with mental activeness.

Research shows the concentration, coordination and self-control needed while learning to dance, helps with other subjects.

DanceSport explores the basics of good old-fashioned partner dances, such as: Waltz, Samba, Cha-Cha. Each class in the programme introduces new steps, reinforcing what has been previously learnt through practice and repetition.

DanceSport:

• is traditional, even in its modern form

• is a great source of social fun and enjoyment

• allows students to meet and socialise across year levels

• is a great way to achieve and maintain a high level of fitness

• helps students develop their social skills

• promotes an appreciation of different kinds of music

Taryn teaches her dance programmes (DanceSport and DanceFit) in schools as part of their regular PE programme. Her dance routines are fun and full of energy!
