Senior Visual Arts with Nina Lawgun

2019 Theme: The Human Conditionjonathan

“What does it mean to be human in the world today

and what might this look like?”

Our theme for 2019 is The Human Condition. This refers to the idea of what it means to be human and the characteristics which make humans unique in this world. 

NCEA and CENZ / HSNZ credits are available through Nina’s Visual Arts courses.

Nina’s Beginner, Foundation, and Senior Visuals Arts classes run weekly at the North Shore YMCA (5 Akoranga Drive, Northcote) to coincide with other HASCA and homeschool activities which happen there each week! Nina also offers various Language and Composition classes. (See ‘What’s On?!‘)


Term Two Dates

Senior: Thursday, May 2nd – 4th July (10wks)

Foundation: Thursday, May 2nd – 4th July (10wks)

Beginner 11+ and 12+: Thursday, May 2nd – 4th July (10wks)


Class (1) Beginner Visual Arts

 Who:   A beginner class for home educated students 11 years+ working towards a Yr9 credit (CENZ) or those planning on doing NCEA Visual Arts.

What:   Students will learn basic drawing & painting skills & develop a basic understanding of art-making practices and theory.

When & Where:   Thursdays 11:45am to 1:00pm @North Shore YMCA (downstairs meeting room)

Class (2) Beginner Visual Arts 12+

Who:  A beginner class for home educated teenaged students 12 years+.

What:   Students will learn basic drawing & painting skills & develop a basic understanding of art-making practices and theory.

When & Where:  Thursdays 1:00pm to 2:15pm @North Shore YMCA

Tutor:   Samantha Thomsen

Class (3) Foundation Visual Arts (NCEA 1)

Who:   This course is a mixed Yr10 and Yr11 class and is best suited to students aged 13+. 

What:   A complete Visual Arts course where Level 1 NCEA credits are available, as are CENZ Yr10 Foundation or Level 1 credits for HSNZ students.

Term 1:     Sculptures inspired by Henri Moore.

Term 2:      Developing gesture drawing and painting skills using mannequins and photography.

Term 3:     Mixed Media and Developing a related body of work in a folio.

Term 4:     Using print-making techniques to explore cultural conventions. 

When & Where:   Thursdays 11:45am – 1:00pm @North Shore YMCA (Rendle Room)

Class (4) Senior Visual Arts (NCEA 2 & 3)

Who:   An advanced class fully aligned with NCEA Visual Arts level 2 (Yr12).

What:   Over three terms students will produce a systematic body of work informed by established practice.

This will include theoretical components in:

  • Art History
  • Art Theory
  • Artist model research & response
  • Art Analysis
  • Thematic research, brainstorming and idea generation
  • Visual research and media experimentation

And practical production of their own works to demonstrate their understanding and application of the above.

  • Tonal drawing from observation using pencils, charcoal and ink.
  • Acrylic painting 
  • Photography
  • Mixed Media Art
  • Composite artworks

The third term will see students produce a body of work for a two-paneled NCEA style external folio assessment.

This course brings with it a demanding workload as a full year’s work needs to be completed over 9  – 10 months.

When & Where:   Thursdays 2:30pm – 4:15pm @North Shore YMCA (Rendle Room)

Fees:    $100 per term, or a discounted price of $95 per term for HASCA members

Nina’s Art Classes have been highly successful! In 2017 several of Nina’s senior art students gained Visual Arts NCEA level 1 and level 2 “endorsed with excellence”.  Similar grades were achieved in 2018.
